“This was my first time at SFF, which is a festival that I’ve wanted to visit ever since I’ve read about how it started during the siege of Sarajevo – to me, that makes it one of the most interesting and inspiring festivals in the world, even though I didn’t quite feel that spirit beneath all of the commercial forces that guide the festival today.
My favourite film this year was Fallen Leaves because of its endearing cynical optimism, dark humour and hypnotic visual style that masterfully incoroporates various distancing devices in order to engage us with the story – I’m just very happy that after all of these years Aki Kaurismäki continues to deliver films that are nothing short of amazing. My other two favourites were Disco Boy – because of its enigmatic yet highly stimulating plot – and Femme, since it seems like a film that could easily satisfy both ordinary viewers and those that look for something more in cinema.”

“This has already been my fifth time visiting the Sarajevo Film Festival and I feel like it’s getting better and better every year. I really love the city and always appreciate when I can come back to visit it for a few days. At the festival, I enjoyed a great atmosphere and have been surrounded by likeminded people that share my passion – nothing beats that!
Top 3 films:
Kiss the Future (Nenad Cicin-Sain) – An ode to how art and culture can bring joy and passion into people’s lives even when the circumstances are most dire. It features prominent artists and politicians and gives a great overview of the events during the Bosnian war. I really enjoyed the film’s positive message and was very happy about the music choices.
Fallen Leaves (Aki Kaurismäki) – I really loved the tenderness of this film. In just about 80 minutes, it manages to introduce characters that the audience really gets to care about. Every piece of dialogue is great and you leave the cinema with a warm feeling in your belly – a great achievement if you ask me!
Adaptation (Spike Jonze) – This is a film about screenwriting, showing how to make films that are surefire hits or surefire failures, so it’s naturally a great pick for a film festival. I really loved to watch a truly original movie and also to see some shots fired at Hollywood’s formulaic big blockbuster machinery. Having Charlie Kaufman at the festival discussing his films in a Masterclass on the same day made this movie experience truly complete.”

- La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher) – Kombinacija genijalnog scenarija s estetski ispraćenim kadrovima.

“This is my first time attending Sarajevo Film Festival as part of the Volim Film program, but also as part of the general audience. I believe the festival is an impressive effort of showcasing the importance and the power of art and cinematography to unite people, to celebrate diversity and to empower change, freedom of thought and human progress – I was very impressed and moved by the spirit of the festival, the wide selection of films and the general openness to dialogue and communication.
3 films that I liked the most:
- Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry (Elene Naveriani) – This is my favorite film of the festival (and this is why I am also happy it was awarded with the Best feature film award) because it manages to create since the very beginning a deep connection between the audience and the main character, a 48 years old simple woman living in a village in Georgia, but who actually contains so much complexity. Therefore, I believe this film makes the audience empathize with the journey of becoming of the main character, while promoting a sensitive feminist message and a hopeful conclusion that life can start again anytime, especially when we might believe it is over.
- “White Plastic Sky” (Tibor Bánóczki) – This is one of my favorite films of the festival because it combines two elements that I generally like about movies: dystopian realities and animation. Thus, I believe this film is a remarkable one because on the one hand it creates a brilliant dystopic reality in which we ask ourselves hard philosophical questions on the future of humankind, which are more relevant than ever (such as “what will happen if in 100 years from now we will run out of resources?”, “what will human beings have to turn into in order to survive?”). On the other hand, the medium chosen for depicting this reality is animation, which to me is the best medium that serves the purpose of the film, because it makes the viewers even more sensitive and helps them open their imagination even more.
- “Club Zero” (Jessica Hausner) – This is also one of my favorite films of the festival for two reasons. First, I believe Jessica Hausner has a unique and distinctive style in her films, all of them being characterized by absurdity and at some points even non-sense, but this is what makes them stand out and leads the audience to mindblowing reactions. Second, more specifically about “Club Zero”, for me this is the best movie of Jessica Hausner’s cinematography because it represents a realistic contemporary tragedy about a current issue of today’s society (eating disorders influenced by harmful contemporary trends, which impact the young people more than ever), which is presented in the same absurd and almost grotesque manner that shakes the audience to its bones. “
